Steve Westby deceased

Life member Steve Westby passed away on the 29th April. He had been admitted to a care home in Nottinghamshire suffering from dementia and it is understood the coronavirus was responsible for his death.

Steve was an innovator, had a most likeable disposition and was a great servant to our association. In 1981 he joined the committee and the very next year became treasurer. Serving two periods as such from 1982 – 1987 and 1991 – 1995. He served as Chairman from 1988 -1990. He was a member of the centenary committee and did a tremendous amount of work in helping to make 1987 a very special year. In 1989 he produced the first newsletter.

Steve was responsible for the start of the midweek walking groups. Initially Tuesday walks on a fortnightly basis started in 1993. After a few years they became weekly walks. He introduced the annual Tuesday coach trips arranging two walks of varying length in neighbouring counties. Steve moved to Nottinghamshire in 2005.

I have been trying to find a photograph of Steve without success and our past president Heather MacDermid has kindly sent me a group photograph taken on a Saturday walk. I attach this photograph and Steve is on the back row, third from the left.
