Long Horse Bridge - Shardlow

After years of waiting the reopening of the footpath at Shardlow over Long Horse Bridge looks imminent. As the recent picture shows the bridge is now in place with no sign of barriers preventing use. Contractors are still on site doing landscaping work.

The original concrete bridge was taken down some years ago as it was considered unsafe. The county boundary between Leicestershire and Derbyshire runs down the centre of the river Trent so the bridge is a joint venture with the county councils and British Waterways. Its return reinstates a through passage for the Midshires Way and moves forward the possibility of the Derbyshire section being upgraded to bridleway status.
